At the beginning of the year I was watching some of the various “fan videos” and, while I am developing a fan video of my own, I also wondered if I couldn’t create (or at least produce) an emotional K/R animated short. I developed a story which shows Ron getting vaporized by Drakken’s and Shego’s death-ray. Kim falls to her knees, weeping over shreds of clothing—the only things left of Ron. Drakken and Shego, so touched by Kim’s obvious broken heart, reverse the effect of the death-ray. The last shot was to be of Kim, still on her knees, looking up to see Ron standing before her; he kneels down and they embrace. The problem with developing such a video is, well, I can’t draw. I can’t draw that fast, anyway. So I tossed the idea aside, until recently I thought that perhaps, rather than try to draw a whole movie, instead condense the scene down to a single picture. My first thought was to draw them lying one on top of the other, dying. I scrapped that idea because a scene of a pile of bodies doesn’t really conjure up much sentimental feeling. Funny that with all the K/R fanart, there aren’t that many of Kim grieving over Ron, or vice-versa. Richard Sirois’ “Horribly Wrong” is the only one I know about. [link] (And his is an absolute classic…look at his shading, it is truly a work of a master artist.) Richard’s pic inspired me to go back to my original idea of Kim’s reacting to Ron’s death. In mine, I thought that an authentic-looking Kim combined with her expression of quiet, yet bitter suffering, would produce a rather emotional image. When I started on this, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It seemed like endless work to get the look just right (I created 39 Photoshop layers on Kim alone!) This is my very first attempt at cell shading, too. You can see how I drew Kim, step-by-step, in this pic in my scraps: [link] There was nothing unusual about what I did, I just re-drew and re-drew until I finally got something I was happy with. I did all the work on this pic, but I had a lot of great advice along the way. I must thank *jao, who taught me the basics on how to draw with Photoshop and she helped me with some last-moment touch-ups. *Levelord, who taught me how to use the pen tool, gave me tips on how to create the rocky background you see here. Most of all I have to thank =Bratty, who guided me through most of the tough spots in this—particularly hands and body alignment. Kim Possible, Dr. Drakken, Shego, and Rufus © Steve, Bob, and Mark |
